Who owns the photos guests take at your wedding?

The three separate things people confuse

• Copyright — generally the photographer, including a guest with a phone.
• Permission to use — what a guest gives when they upload to your event gallery.
• Privacy — a separate question about the people appearing in the photo, which matters most once face matching is involved.

What this means in practice

Collecting guest photos into one gallery is normal and expected at an event. Publishing them more widely — a business using them in advertising, for instance — is a different act and should be asked for separately. That is why RSVPix does not use your event photos to advertise RSVPix unless you have separately said we can, in writing, after the event.

The practical advice

• Tell guests what the photos are for when you ask for them.
• You review what guests upload and decide what appears before anyone else sees it.
• If a guest asks for their photo removed, remove it. It costs nothing and it is the right answer.
• Download what you want to keep before the gallery closes. The gallery is convenience, not archival storage.
